The Hidden Hand:

Alien Contact and the Government Cover-Up

The Hidden Hand is a controversial  Award-winning documentary that explores the possibility of an extraterrestrial presence here on Earth. The film takes a keen look at a spectrum of topics like alien abduction, human/alien hybridization, the military's reverse-engineering of alien technology and the government cover-up of anything related to extraterrestrials. Is preoccupation with E.T.'s a form of cultural madness, or is something really going on?

How would E.T. contact change the religious and political institutions of our society? The Hidden Hand is full of riveting interviews with experts and experiencers alike: Whitley Streiber, Dr. Edgar Mitchell, the 6th astronaut on the moon, Paul Hellyer, a former Canadian Defence Minister, Richard Dolan, Jim Marrs, Linda Moulton Howe, Col. John Alexander, Nassim Haramein, David Icke, Graham Hancock and Paola Harris, among others. The shadowy world of UFOs is suddenly brought to light.

The film has won 4 awards including

An EBE for Best Documentary

The Philip K. Dick Award for Best Documentary

The Aliens to Zombies Award for Best Documentary.

More Praise for the film from experts in UFOlogy:

"James Carman has put together one of the most original and touching portrayals of humanity's ongoing struggle to understand the most profound mystery of our time: our interaction with the beings who are behind the UFO phenomenon — whoever and whatever they are. Artfully put together, it features many voices that have not previously been heard, and offers perspectives all of us can learn from."

-   Richard Dolan, Historian and Author of, UFOs and the National Security State Vol. I and II, and A.D. After Disclosure

"The Hidden Hand, produced and directed by James Carman, is one of the best documentaries about the complex puzzle of the UFO phenomena that I have seen in my long career as a TV producer and investigative journalist.James Carman's film should be seen by everyone who wonders why politicians who love the limelight won't touch the UFO mystery."

-       Linda Moulton Howe, Emmy award winning producer and author of Glimpses of Other Realities, Volumes I and II

The rise of astrobiology.

In the `Space Age `nineteen seventies the terms `barren` and `inhospitable` were much employed to describe the planets in our increasingly depopulated solar system. Talk of life on Mars was bracketed, in the main, with Percival Lowell's eccentric belief in canals on Mars.

Meanwhile, nostalgic compilations of old science fiction tales like Farewell Fantastic Venus  were doing the rounds. If anybody was out there, we all thought, they would be separated by many light years from us.

In the last two decades, nevertheless, there has been a renewed belief that there might be some forms of life out there which share the same sunlight as us. Attention has been focused on the moons of Jupiter and Saturn which could harbour microbial forms of life.

This sea change in outlook was brought about by finding new life down here. Extremophiles are life forms that have adapted to situations once thought inimical to survival. They have been caught hiding in many a crevice. In February 2013, for instance, living bacteria was found in the cold and dark of a lake buried a mile and a half beneath Antarctica. Likewise, life has been found thriving in the mouths of active volcanoes.

Martian redux.

After the American robot called Viking had scuttled about two million miles away on the surface of the red planet, the big headline to follow was that there were no little green men there, nor any other forms of life. Behind the scenes, though, there has long been more of a dispute about exactly was encountered up there. One of the devices that Viking employed, tried to determine whether life existed in the Martian soil. To do this it got organisms to feast on irradiated nutrients which – if they existed – would show up on Geiger counter readings when the organisms breathed out. To the surprise of all, it found positive results.

The problem was that another test, involving a Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer, found nothing to indicate life. Erring on the side of caution, NASA decided that it was best to say that no evidence was found for life on Mars. Instead the positive result was ascribed to the action of hydrogen peroxide – a chemical that is not even known to exist on that planet.

Among those who think that NASA got it wrong is Gilbert Levin who designed the device which gave positive results. Backing him is Joe Miller, a cell biologist of the University of California who declared in 2002 that he was over `90% certain` that the Viking had after all discovered life (Brookes, p-93).

If life can withstand more, and is more widespread, than we once thought, might life have reached us via meteorites as Lord Kelvin theorised?

It is exactly this question which has been answered by the respected Northern English maverick astronomer Fred Hoyle and his Sri Lankan associate Chandra Wickramasinghe. In 1978 they contended that not only did life arrive from space but also viruses such as the bubonic plague did too. Wickramasinghe has since proposed, in The Lancet no less, that SARS may an extraterrestrial infection.

This notion of interplanetary contamination is not so new. The influential TV science fiction thriller The Quatermass Experiment (1953) is predicated on a fear of just that. In the real world, the Galileo space probe, after it had done its tour of the moons of Jupiter, was made to crash on that planet in 2003 to ensure that it did not contaminate its area of study.

The independent researcher Alexander Popoff, writing in the UFO Digest has suggested that the lack of non-terrestrial micro-organisms detected around the scenes of close Encounters with UFOs and their alleged occupants is a strong argument against their identity as being space aliens.

Biological SETI.

The concept of panspermia has, in recent times, received a boost in credibility. The Daily Mail Online reports that in April 2013 a group of geneticists used a computer based projection to determine when life started. By use of Moore's law – which governs the speed increases of computers – they concluded that life must be 10 billion years old. Given that the earth itself is less than half that age, you may draw your own conclusions....

Are we the descendants of Martian microbes then, or did life on Mars (if it exists) come from the earth, or could both worlds be recipients of life that was floating about in the cosmos for a long time before that? Moreover, is there any room now for Crick and Ogel's space arks? Should these be parked away in the land of fiction?

Perhaps not. To the dismay of many of their peers both Hoyle and Wickramasinghe, the former in the Intelligent Universe (1983), later went onto envisage the possibility that life may have been designed in some way. Since neither are were religious, in any conventional sense, they seemed to be hinting at the involvement of alien intelligences. Indeed, the more we learn about DNA, the more we liken its complexity to a carrier of information.

Two astrophysicists from Kazakhstan, Vladimir Cherbak and Maxim Makukov have theorised that an alien code is written into our very DNA. They published this hypothesis in May 2013 – in Icarus, the very journal that also published Crick and Ogel's paper exactly forty years ago! Perhaps Francis Crick, the co-discoverer of DNA, might be vindicated in his bold vision of interstellar forebears after all.

How narrow and limited mainstream science often is! Every now and then, it comes up with a study which says near-death experience such as the consciousness leaving the body and encountering a wondrous "alien" universe – is just a myth. Medical researchers have announced (again) that near-death experience may well be caused by a surge of electrical firing in the dying brain. This new research was done on animals; many of us object to the use of research animals in this way – a subject for another day.
"Whether the animals perceive a white light or tunnel of light, that's something we can't know," said study researcher Jimo Borjigin, a neuroscientist at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. However, dying brains registered definite agitated activity, perhaps even hallucinations or strange perceptions; this is all simply the brain's desperate effort to contact and re-charge the dying or dead body, according the mainstream science. And then, the brain dies too.
The question is simple: Is the brain all we've got? Or do we have a conscious mind which has nested in the physical folds of the brain for all the years of our lifetime?
Is our brain that which is aware? Or is it our unique consciousness, vibrating with its electromagnetic field and sub-atomic quantum particles which bring awareness and perception?
In other words, our brain seems to be more like the pipes of a plumbing design while our consciousness is the water which runs through these pipes. When the pipes "die," the water runs onward. It does not die too.
Electromagnetic currents form streams and eddies, even mainstream science agrees with this. Throughout the universe, there are plasma networks; in fact, all galaxies are connected with electric threads of plasma – electromagnetic networks. We know from the phenomenon of lightning that electricity runs on plasma corridors or networks. And so, like water running out the plumbing system (the dead brain), our consciousness exits the body and begins to run in the quantum tributaries and rivers of consciousness which compose our quantum universe.
My question to the researchers who recently announced that near-death experiences are only the dying brain's shocked reaction to dying: Do you assume that when the brain finally dies with the rest of the physical body, that the individual's consciousness dies too or never existed? Can you really, considering the incredible research of quantum physics into consciousness itself, state yet and still that the brain is all we've got?
Near Death Experiencers report finding their consciousness expanding outside the boundaries of their bodies. They say that the feeling is like taking off a tight shoe or an uncomfortable suit of armour. They report that this experience is much more real than waking reality.
Thousands of documented cases prove that Near Death Experiencers can see and report accurately on what happened to their bodies when they were clinically dead, with no brain waves and in cardiac arrest.
The following is from Dr. Bruce Greyson's article in the stunning book, Varieties of Anomalous Experience: Examining the Scientific Evidence and this was also reported on public radio:
"Pam Reynold, 'died' of a brain aneurysm; the only way to save her was to perform an outrageously risky surgery. The physicians chilled her body and then "drained the blood out of her head like oil from a car engine." According to her physician, Dr. Robert Spetzler, she was 'as deeply comatose as you can be and still be alive.'
In spite of the fact that her brain was completely drained and non-functional (she was effectively brain dead for the entire operation), Ms. Reynold says she 'floated to the ceiling' and witnessed 20 people working on her in surgery. Later, she was able to describe in detail, the surgical instruments used during her operation and comments made by the medical team. She was able to observe this, even though her ears and eyes were covered with impenetrable barriers -- in addition to being brain dead.
She had the amazing near-death experience of seeing a tunnel with bright light and long-dead relatives. When Ms. Reynold reported her after-death experience to Dr. Spetzler, he was startled. 'From a scientific perspective,' he says, 'I have absolutely no explanation about how it could have happened.' Neuroscientist Mario Beauregard of the University of Montreal, on the other hand, does have a theory based on his recent study of 15 people who had near-death experiences that might offer an explanation.
Dr. Beauregard contends that the mind lives outside the physiology of the brain (my italics), so that even when the brain dies, the mind (as opposed to the brain) has the ability to remain aware. In his study, he asked subjects to recall what happened to them when they died as he measured their brain-wave activity via 32 electrodes. According to his findings, the NDE changes brain wave patterns permanently, conferring the individual with an ability to move into a delta state similar to that experienced by monks, yogis, and long-time meditators." (end quote from Pam Reynold case and articles).
It is exciting to realize that we are reaching the step in our evolution wherein Science and Spirituality meet and become one – a larger sum than their individual parts! Religions, from Christianity's heaven, to the Hindu Nirvana, have simply given the universal quantum field different names.
Ultimately the realization that the universe is consciousness itself will bring us together as one human race – and then we can set sail out into the cosmos. We will have come of age!

Kevin W. Smith

UFO Investigator & World Renown Radio Host

UFO Digest & Friends Remember a Great UFO Investigator

Robert D. Morningstar & Jerry Wills

It is with a heavy heart, and with great sadness that I announce the passing on Wednesday August 14th, 2013 of our friend and UFO Digest Asian Correspondent, Kevin Smith, the long-time host of The Kevin Smith Show, which was syndicated across the country and around the world for over a decade.

The Kevin Smith Show  <www.KevinSmithShow.com> became over time the foremost and most closely followed UFO related radio program in the world.  Kevin took great pride when he told me in 2010.of having expanded his audience to over 2 million listeners (with even more since then).
It was my honor to know Kevin Smith and to call him "My Friend."  Kevin was a great supporter of UFO Digest and all things UFOlogical, as long as they were on the level and not frauds.
Kevin was a lover of Truth, Justice and the American... He was a "superman" in his own right.  He despised deception in government affairs and spoke forthrightly for our Constitutional right, especially, for the Right to KNOW what our government is doing in our names.  He supported UFO Disclosure and gave time to scores of UFO researchers, UFO witnesses, and abductees.   He treated all his guest with courtesy and respect, whether he agreed with them or not.
Kevin was a dedicated investigator of planetary science and wrote books on Planet Venus and Planet Mars.  I am proud to have worked with him, contributing enhanced images of Mars and Moon images to his books and articles.  It was always a pleasure to work with Kevin Smith. Kevin was a warrior, a soldier (UN International Policeman, served in Croatia during the 1990s).  Kevin Smith was true gentleman with a great sense of humor...   :)
Please note Kevin's  "S & M*... Poo-Bahs Freak Out"
Photo below from our show on NSA snooping broadcast in April 2011
"Poo-bahs" was Kevin's personal term for the "Powers that be"
or...Mass media "Know-it-Alls"
As you can see, Kevin and Co. were 2 years ahead of Edward Snowden, regarding NSA snooping...
"Who Knew?"   -> Kevin Smith knew!
We had our phone lines cut many times while were "on air,"  too often to be "chance"...
Begging the question from one or the other of us:
"Are we really being "paranoid" when they're really after us?"
Kevin and I used to crack a laugh over that quip... more than once.
I recall one day when I called him one afternoon, he asked to help him find a "bug" that he thought had been planted in his studio (using the interference I heard on my phone to "home in" on the source that was causing interference (a flutter in the sound)...Eventually, he found something "weird" was coming from his printer. So Kevin "chucked" the printer, cartridges and all, and the interference ceased.
When you look at the attached photos, you will see why I always dreamed of casting Kevin Smith as "President Eisenhower" in a Roswell-Holloman AFB UFO movie that was sadly never made.  He would have been perfect as "Ike", with his voice and sense of gravitas, equal assets to his appearance for the role.
I am appending below the notice of his passing that I received today from his longtime friend and KSS co-host, Jerry Wills.
He was a good friend to all of us, simply, by pursuing his never-ending quest for the Truth.
I shall surely miss hearing him say again:
"My Friends call me 'Steel Eyes'!
But you can call me..."
May you  rest in peace, "Steel Eyes"!

Who was with Kevin Smith during his final days.
Hi Folks...
As you know, Kathy and I were very close to Kevin. I last spoke with him Tuesday afternoon as we were moving out of the Prairie Schooner (our RV), and into our new place in Jerome, Az. It was terribly hot, we were exhausted with sweat drenching our clothes as we loaded on item after another into our truck under a searing sun. The move stopped, and we chatted for awhile on speaker phone.

Kevin sounded tired, but promised he was feeling much better. His humor was intact as was his incredible wit as he joked about how he couldn't live someplace so close to the gates of Hell. We laughed and Kathy agreed it was a crappy place to exist. Kevin then told us he had a new song to share with us the following day, promising to call us the next afternoon.

As I write this Kathy and I are numb from the news. Kevin was a family member of ours, not only a friend. Over the years we shared his concerns, frustrations and disappointments during calls that lasted hours. We plotted and schemed on how KSS, and the music, would succeed and grow. Kevin had high hopes, huge dreams, and an indomitable spirit. To say he will be missed is a misnomer. It has been less than 24 hours... The silence is deafening, the vacuum suffocating. Our hearts ache...

As for his wife and son; He never shared any information about contacting them. I've ask others he knew, and they don't know either. What we know very well is that he wished he could have joined them. He deeply loved his wife and son. I have no idea if they have received the news of his passing.

Life continues for us all. Kevin made the world a batter place by his presence. In all the things he did to bring us together, and share himself with us, he created a community. I've always said to bring out the best in others you must give the best of yourself. Kevin is an example of how true my observation was.
The World is a Better Place Because He Walked Beside Us...

Watch FB for an update. I plan to continue to broadcast on the KSS Channel,
or one I might need to create. The details will come in later days.

Best Wishes
Jerry Wills
A public memorial was held in Jerome, AZ  on Friday, August 23rd, 2013
Kevin's life was honored and remembered by many friends and members of the UFO Community.

An unusual geologic feature with an even stranger reputation among its victims.

At the turn of the Twentieth Century an obscure but terrifying event occurred in Australia. At Flat Rock or Ayers Rock as it is also known as in Australia, a mysterious incident occurred that left people horrified over the aftermath and asking questions. Ayers Rock is a strange rock formation that rises high above a predominantly flat surrounding region of desert and arid plains. It is here that a strange event transpired that left a public elementary school teacher and school children in an inexplicable state of shock that left them speechless and unable to articulate just exactly what had actually happened!

Click here to enlarge top photo.

Shrouded in mystery

Looking back in retrospect at this mysterious incident that left children and a teacher emotionally disabled in its wake, one must ask why this case was never explained or investigated in more depth. One might even wonder why further research was not conducted on this obscure event in later years to determine exactly what indeed had happened in lieu of a scathing effort at trying to determine what had happened, yet did not arrive at an adequate explanation. Apparently with the advent of World War I in years to come and several strange nocturnal aerial sightings in the years to come in Bass Straits this disturbing incident was simply overlooked or forgotten.

It is not unusual for events to occur that are little known even though they might cause fear and confusion being largely overlooked as world events eclipse them, but at the turn of the century in 1900 what was going on that really would have caused such a disturbing occurrence to go overlooked or to be bypassed because of a succession of noteworthy events? Nothing. The Incident at Flat Rock remains enigmatically reported yet poorly investigated and unjustifiably ignored at a time when attention grabbing headlines were relatively in high demand.

Other events in the world

In 1904 a formation of aerial lights landed near a US Navy ship off the US coast but drew little attention after it was recorded in a Maritime journal, the US was involved in countering Muslim guerillas in the Philippines. General Pershing had been chasing Poncho Vila over the US Mexican border, but prior to the tensions that were building in Europe over World War I things were rather calm. There was no reason that the Incident at Flat Rock should have been received with so little coverage by the media other than the remote area of the world that it had happened in. Even though radio was not in wide use yet, the Incident on Flat Rock strangely sank into obscurity unsolved.

What happened?

As the story goes, a female school teacher of an elementary level class had taken her group on a field trip that would have placed them at the top of Ayers Rock. Apparently this was a fairly common exercise that had been carried out before, but on this occasion something went terribly wrong! There are really no witnesses to testify to the actual events that took place, only the disturbing aftermath. After taking what was too have amounted to a blissful field trip the teacher was to lead her class to rendezvous with a horse and wagon to transport the children back down Flat Rock to the school.

From this point all fact and logic flies out the window and only testimony of the compelling aftermath brings many to speculate about the cause, the culprits, and what evil that could have occurred that would lead ordinary children and their teacher to remain in the psychological state they were found in! That afternoon after the school teacher had informed everyone involved what her class would be involved in and where, reality became a very strange and threatening commodity. Because the unknown had come knocking that fateful day and whatever would have normally transpired on a routine school day became a desperate study in the realm of mystery. This bizarre anecdote in history would reverberate decades later in the form of a proposed movie asking the same questions I am pondering now.

In the heat of that fateful afternoon after the teacher and class had failed to return in a timely manner from their field trip at Flat Rock, concerned parents and local authorities had taken notice and a search was conducted. It was not thought to be anymore than a simple explanation at first. A broken wheel on the horse wagon, perhaps an unforeseen delay, maybe a child had ventured into mischief and gotten hurt, but what they speculated over and what they found became two very different things!

Why did this mystery receive so little attention?

As a local sheriff, parents, and volunteers ascended Flat Rock wondering what could have been the matter soon they were to arrive at a seemingly impossible aftermath of some mysterious yet very terrifying confrontation that had left the children permanently mute and traumatized and a teacher that was unable to articulate exactly what could have happened! An event that would have necessitated a rapid response and spike in journalistic reporting did not apparently elicit an international outcry at the turn of the Twentieth Century. Maybe it just wasn't on par with a brewing war or crime involving train robberies or border clashes. Perhaps, this very weird story was simply relegated to the back pages of Australian newspapers and even less attention from publications abroad.

The scene

As the actual story goes, once the teacher and her class who had gone on a field trip to the top of Ayers Rock did not return on time. When a group of citizens and a local deputy followed their last known whereabouts a most disturbing discovery was to be found. Several young children who made up the class were found wandering the immediate area so traumatized that they had been reduced to behaving like mutes. The teacher herself was found in the same state. There were no indications of violence, attempted kidnapping, or any circumstantial indicators of a criminal act. Yet, here were several children and their teacher whose minds had been so assaulted that they were incapable of relating the events that had occurred which had left the class of young kids and their teacher severely affected.

Few treatment options

In the early 1900's there were not advanced methods of regressive hypnosis that could have helped uncover the repressed memories of these people who had experienced something so horrifying that they were left dazed and permanently afflicted from a mental standpoint. This is a common psychological state after a person has experienced something so adverse, so scary, that they are unable to normally cope. So, the mind creates a method of coping that may not seem helpful to those inquiring about what caused the incident, but it gives the percipient a place to hide deep in their own psyche until such time as they can be coaxed out of this state of mind or therapy can provoke a reaction that leads to an explanation.

However, in the Incident at Flat Rock, no such clarification was ever reached. Neither the parents, the authorities, or medical practitioners of the time could come up with any logical explanation. The children never recovered or talked about what happened on that fateful day. The teacher was unable to give an account of what eerie or maddening situation that had transpired which had left a group of people literally out of their minds and unable to recover. There are many legends and superstitions in Australia. Some of these come from the aboriginals while others have been told by their first frontiersman of Australia. They were prisoners of her Majesty the Queen while Australia was used by Great Britain as a vast penal colony. Many of the English for years viewed Australians as second class citizens in thinking of the descendants who came to Australia as convicted criminals brought to Australia to serve out their time in the demanding extremes of that distant wild continent.

A film project that never came to fruition

In the early 1990's the director and producer for the proposed movie, "Incident at Flat Rock", made a speaking tour about their upcoming cinematic project. On numerous radio talk shows they explained what had inspired them to reproduce this bizarre historic recreation. They talked about the strange mishap that remained buried in obscurity. They explained that the upcoming movie would soon be released. I listened to that program in Dallas and wondered with great curiosity what the movie would be like and how they would present the events on the screen. Yet, as time passed, nothing happened. The movie apparently never was finished, ran out of funding, or was never distributed. Such is the case with many film projects that simply cannot be adequately financed or that can negotiate with a distributor to get the film to the theaters.

There have been many theories as to what happened by the locals of the time as well as contemporary explanations ventured by those of today. Some of the villagers in Australia had said that the Devil himself had made an appearance to the school teacher and children and driven them crazy! Still others had thought that a bunch of bandits had attempted to kidnap the children and teacher to hold them for ransom, which would not have made much sense. In the modern day one theory was that perhaps a UFO had landed in full sight of the children and their teacher. This certainly would have scared the group in the course of their field trip, but would not likely have silenced them. Perhaps they had all been abducted, and their experience had been hidden by placing a psychological barrier deep within their minds? Perhaps all of them were simply unable to cope with something so foreign to their experience.

As it is today

Today Ayers Rock or Flat Rock, as the incident refers to, is the scene of the occasional freak accident or unexplained mishap, but it apparently keeps its secrets well. It now serves interest as a national park and recreation area in Australia. Hazards most likely encountered these days are relegated to fires or storms that might be encountered by tourists. Was Flat Rock or Ayers Rock as it is called, the site of an ancient aboriginal burial ground? Is it a location where locals or aboriginals consider it to be a place of evil and has kept that reputation? It is hard to say. One thing is for sure though. This incident will remain to be an unsolved tragedy forever, and we will likely never be able to do much more than guess what rendered these poor children and their teacher into such a state.

Ufos and Paranormal Phenomena

I have been getting emails from all over the country with photo's attached by people upset by what they saw floating by them in the night sky. I understand how easily the large bright lanterns now available can look like a very strange object aglow in the night sky. As I looked at the photos being sent to me and read the description of how they silently floated together in the sky until they blinked out or some have a flame drop before they blinked out I knew - it was most likely lanterns. Lanterns seem to fly in formation as they all follow the same wind pattern and each other across the sky until they burn out. Some will drop a final flame just before they blink out. Below find an experiment I watched about two years ago at a beach weeding when hundreds of very large orange large round lanterns were sent out over the water in to the night sky. They all flew in formation until they blinked or burned out and dropped a bit of the flame left below them to the ground before burning and blinking out.

Click here to enlarge top photo.

I have been sent some amazing reports of incredible crafts being seen this summer however we also must be careful not to confuse a lantern for something other than what it really is.

Below are the photos I took of the lantern experiment I watched.

If what you are seeing looks like any of these above and flew together following the same path or wind direction and then blinked out they are Chinese lanterns . I took the photos above of the lantern experiment I did and yes they do look like UFOs and can be very large. If they changed direction and took off in different directions or stopped and hovered that is different.

Some lanterns are very large and seem craft size from the ground when seen burning in the night sky. I have even seen on line large UFO shaped lanterns for sale. It is the way they float along in the wind together on the same wind path and flicker out that makes it easy to determine what you are looking at. Apparently these large lanterns have become very popular over the past few years and used often during the summer months for all types of celebrations and backyard or beach type parties.

It was a few billion years ago when The Conveyors had first arrived. From some far flung arm of the galaxy they had been travelling for longer than any sentient being was capable of remembering. They sliced through the hellish void of the cosmos and pushed forth in all directions. Within their glittering frames they nurtured the most precious cargo in all the universe....When one of The Conveyors chanced upon a Yellow dwarf-type star, and around this an aquatic world, its automated system, for it had no pilot, told it to slow down. The Conveyor then plunged into the atmosphere of this new world. On crashing onto the surface it ejected the spoor that it contained onto the waters and the rocks. This, at last, was hope for a new start....

That scenario is, of course, science fiction. In a notorious exchange with the controversialist Ben Stein, however, a respected British ethologist said something that was to create shockwaves. He said:

`I could be that at some earlier time, somewhere in the Universe, a civilisation evolved, probably by some kind of Darwinian means, probably to a high level of technology, and designed a form of life that they seeded onto this planet. Now that is a possibility, an intriguing possibility`.

The speaker was speculating, but plummy voice, which tells of nannies and the dreaming spires of Oxford, belonged to one Richard Dawkins.

Dawkins represents the voice of Established Science. There is a formaldehyde whiff of Nineteenth Century materialist zeal about him. He is also the arch-scourge of beliefs in God or Gods, particularly in the form of organised religion. Here he was, though, entertaining an idea which presupposed the existence of intelligent alien beings. Had he gone all Prometheus on us?

Much of the on-line response to these remarks (which Dawkins has made more than once) issued from Bible bashers. They see this as an attempt by an atheist to wriggle out of the need for divine intervention to explain the presence of life.

Dawkins has since made out that he was simply holding out an `olive branch` to believers in creation. It was all by way of a `thought experiment` he said. Nevertheless, as we shall see, this is not the first time that a reputable scientist has explored such a notion.

The Big Birth.

Abiogenesis, the generation of life on earth, is, by general consent, one of the key mysteries of science. The process does not occur now and, assuming it ever did, could only have done so when the earth was another kind of planet altogether: the earth 3 billion years ago. This was a murky world of gas clouds and volcanoes.

Scientists have made attempts to restage these conditions to see if they were favourable to the formation of life. In 1953 Stanley Miller, of the University of Chicago, ran a much vaunted test. In one test tube he had water and in another a mix of methane, ammonia and hydrogen sulphide gas. He joined the two and passed an electrical spark through it all.

It came to pass that, a few days later, organic compounds such as sugars and amino acids, had been generated. This Frankenstinian exercise, whilst sometimes hailed as the creation of life, only demonstrated that the constituents of life can be so formed, and not life per se. In fact, as Bill Bryson in A Short History of Nearly Everything said:

`Despite half a century of further study we are nowhere nearer synthesising life today than we were in 1953 – and much further away from thinking we can ` (P-350).

Whence the miracle of sentience then? In 1871 Lord Kelvin, the Scottish mathematical physicist, argued that life may have hitched a ride on a meteorite. This was a model – called panspermia – that would be taken up again much later, as we shall see.

Meanwhile, in 1960, Thomas Gould, an Austrian Professor of astronomy, suggested another proposal. This was full of comic bathos. Life was but `cosmic garbage` left behind by accident by passing extraterrestrial beings! This idea bears some resemblance to the premise of the novel Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Sturgatsky published in 1971.

ET-Ex Machina?

It would also be in 1971, however, that a more provocative variant of the panspermia thesis would be aired. A conference was held on Communication with Extraterrestrial Intelligences at Byuraka Observatory in Armenia. At this a biologist and a chemist stood up an announced that maybe life had been placed here on purpose by alien beings! Carl Sagan was amongst those present, and the reason nobody laughed was that the molecular biologist was Francis Crick. It was he who, along with James Watson, had won the Nobel Prize in 1953 for discovering DNA. His associate, Leslie Orgel was an organic chemist from the Salk Institute for Biological Study.

These men would later polish their thesis and present it in an article for Icarus  two years later. This was called Directed Panspermia.

The authors felt that the idea of life getting here from space in meteorites or interstellar dust was a `Nineteenth Century` one. Microbial life could not survive either the temperatures or the radiation levels of deep space. However, an `unmanned special long range spacecraft` could well have introduced `blue-green algae` onto this planet.

They added that since the Milky Way galaxy is 13 billion years old there has been enough time for a civilisation with sufficient technical capabilities to carry through such a scheme. Sending life in microbial form would be a wiser use of their resources than doing so in person. Furthermore ` we are unlikely to be their sole descendants`.

As for why: since we are dealing with aliens we can but speculate. Were they facing extinction and this was their last desperate bid for some kind of continuity? Was it an experiment? Or was it a part of a long term scheme to terraform our planet with a view to future habitation?

Some of the supporting evidence they give for Directed Panspermia includes the fact that molybdenum, which is essential for the formation of living organisms, is rare on this planet.

They also make something of the puzzling truth that the structure of DNA is identical in all the life-forms on earth: this might imply a common, off-world source.

Furthermore, it is telling that micro-organisms make themselves known abruptly in our fossil records without sign of prebiotic organisms being here first.

Crick and Ogel even go so far as to make guesses as to the kind of space transport that would have to be used, and the kind of speeds they would need to move at:

`It would not be necessary to accelerate the spaceship to extremely high velocities, since its arrival time would not be important. The radius of our galaxy is about 10/5 light years, so we could infect most planets in the galaxy within 10/8 yr by means of a spaceship travelling at only one thousandth the velocity of light. Several hundred stars are within a hundred light years of the Earth and could be reached within as  little as a million years by a spaceship travelling at only 60,000 m.p.h or within 10,000 yr if a speed of a hundredth of that of light were possible` (Crick and Ogel, p 343)

Some commentators have maintained that the authors were just indulging in a bit of science fictional fun. They revised their views a little when more became known about terrestrial biology, they say. Be that as it may, Crick did revisit these views eight years later in full length book form in Life Itself (1981).

What does seem odd, when we look back, is how little attention this received from the Ancient Astronaut (or Paleo-Contact) theorists of the time. The Icarus publication coincided with the trend of writers like Erich von Daniken, Robert Temple, and Richard Mooney, to name but a few, suggesting extraterrestrial involvement in earthly affairs - albeit at a much later date in human history. Had Crick and Ogel been influenced by this? Were they making a concession? Might had the Paleo-contact writers been given a bit more credence if they had acknowledged this? It is only of late that Graham Hancock (who is not even a Paleo-contact advocate as such) has started to mention Francis Crick and Leslie Ogel's brave foray into the outer limits.

Spain: A Terrible Night in August (1973)

Researchers: Joaquín Mateos Nogales, Manuel Filpo Cabana, Gloria Andreu de los Santos and Antonio Moya Cerpa
Report and Drawing: Antonio Moya Cerpa

The Beginning

We heard about this case 5 years after it occurred. But it doesn't matter. As someone said quite wisely, "Ufologists aren't news reporters" and a case can be very interesting regardless of the date it took place.

As in most investigations we have performed, it has been our dear friend and colleague Joaquín Mateos who learned of the event, got in touch with the witnesses and arranged an interview for Saturday, 9 September 1978. For reasons beyond our control, we could not make it to the indicated spot at the arranged time and the witness went off to the cinema with his wife. We had to wait two hours to talk to him, but we believe it was well worth it.

Finally, comfortably seated, we began talking to the witness of this incredible event, and recorded the interview on magnetic tape. Once the necessary playbacks were made to prepare this report, we have taken two things into consideration:
1) We are in favor of presenting the story in the first person, as it seems "livelier" and more interesting to the reader if done that way, and
2) Due to the multiple linguistic expressions and the peculiar figures of speech employed by our rural folk, which are barely understandable elsewhere in the country, we have thought it prudent to make the report in the 3rd person to facilitate understanding, and abiding by the statements obtained, of course.

The Area

Gerena is a town in the province of Seville, where UFO sightings are rather common. We are completely unaware of what causes this. Perhaps the community has a certain attraction, or it could be a hypothetical "obligatory thruway" by these objects (or whatever they are) or perhaps (as a good friend has remarked) they are attracted by the activities of UFO research groups in the area. Who knows? Whatever the truth, many people in this town have seen UFOs, from the more "normal" cases to the truly mind-bending ones.
Gerena is 30 kilometers northwest of Seville. The Seville-Extremadura-Madrid Highway is located some 5 kilometers to the east.
The event we are going to describe took place some 3.5 kilometers in the direction of this highway, near the country home known as "El Esparragal". It is a cropland area, relatively plant, with a few hills on its periphery. The witnesses were working, in fact, at a cotton field in the area.

The Witnesses

A total of 7 people witnessed this event. We have only been able to locate one, Mr. Antonio Fernández González, married (single at the time of the incident), some thirty-odd years old. According to this man, the other people with him that evening were: David González, Francisco Barrera, Antonio Palomo (deceased), all of them residents of Gerena. He only remembers two of the others, called Francisco and Ventura (two of them lived in Las Pajanosas and the other in Guillena, towns adjacent to Gerena). Our colleague Joaquín Mateos knows the witnesses who live in Gerena very well, and assures us they are very earnest and trustworthy.

The Event

It all happened on a Saturday in mid-August 1973 between 3:30 and 4 in the morning. The event has been burned in Mr. Fernández's memory and with good reason.

The seven witnesses were irrigating the cotton with sprinklers along with seven other people working in a distant sector of the plantation. They worked in teams and their work shift ran from 8:00 in the evening until 8:00 a.m., a total of 12 hours. The first sprinkler shift took place between 8 and 10 p.m., and they left the country home at 2:00 a.m. once more to make a second sprinkling of the cotton until 4 a.m., approximately. Finally, around 8:00 a.m., they toured the plantation again to inspect the sprinkler lines to make sure none were stuck. That brought their shift to a close.

It was little over 3:30 a.m. that Saturday and our witness, accompanied by David González, was inspecting one of the sprinkler lines – a 300 meter-long one, unhooking it and changing the direction of the irrigation, each using their respective flashlights. These were large, powerful flashlights, fed with four batteries and producing a large beam of light. While one did the hooking, the other
provided illumination with the flashlight, and they alternated countless times.

As Mr. Fernández walked between the cotton on the highest part of the terrain, he saw a source of white light in the distance, coming down a slope. He stared at the light earnestly, and some 30 paces ahead (distance between one sprinkler and another) stood Francisco Barrera and David Gonzalez. He asked them if they had seen "that thing" and they replied affirmatively. It could have something to do with the hunters entering the area aboard their vehicles.

But our witness thought it was "too much light" for a car.

They continued working and glancing at the light. The sooner they finished their job, the more time they would have to rest until it was time to perform the last inspection at 8 a.m. – but the light source grew closer and they began to feel concerned. "That looks like bad news," remarked one of the men. Our witness sat on the water pipe and they continued trying to find a satisfactory explanation for the light. "It's coming closer and it's not a car or a plane. It's higher than a car and a plane isn't going to fly so low at this time of night."

By now all of them were very serious. Another companion, further away, wondered: "Do you think it's one of those flying saucers people are talking about?"

"He had to say it!" Mr. Fernández told us. "A flying saucer. That's exactly what it is. Can't you see it?"

The light drew closer, its glow blinding those who looked upon it. Our witness, not knowing anything about "flying saucers", prostrated himself on the mud between the cotton rows. His companions followed suit.

And the object flew right over them, very close to the ground.

It is hard to provide a chronological account of everything the witness told us in the interview, since he mixed in events that were done at the start with those that occurred toward the middle and the end. His nervousness, and the five years that have gone by, have not allowed us to coordinate one detail with the next. However, we will endeavor to present his overall statements.
The sky was completely clear. Stars were visible and only a waning moon lit the area. The unusual object appeared from the northwest, passing over the witnesses and heading toward Las Pajanosas (northeast) and returning flying over the frightened laborers.

The UFO was shaped like an eye or an inverted plate. Seen at a certain distance, it was completely round underneath, something they were able to attest as it passed only few meters above the witnesses.

According to Mr. Fernández, when the object was above him, he WOULDN'T LOOK (emphasis in the original – SC) and therefore did not see some red light sources it appeared to have on its lower section – a detail visible to Mr. David González, who was buried in mud a short distance from Mr. Fernández.

When the object pulled away, the called out to Antonio Palomo, who was farther away, to see if something had befallen him (the UFO had been suspended in the air for a few minutes over by his position) but Palomo would not answer. He was also buried in mud and couldn't hear a thing, a fact they were able to ascertain later by looking at him.
David Gonzalez, who was the boldest, would lift his head when the object was practically overhead, hoping to see occupants or portholes. Our witness advised him not to do it, "or they'll tear your head off". The others couldn't hear a thing. They were lying on the ground, covered in mud and water.

Whenever the UFO pulled away, they would stand up, turn on their flashlights and resume their chores, as they wanted to complete their work on the sprinklers as soon as possible to go and rest. They continued their task until the object returned to fly over them again. This situation repeated itself 4 or 5 times, with the observation lasting a total of 20 minutes.

The witnesses noticed that every time the object pulled away and they got up off the ground, there was a sort of white fog left in the area which kept them from even seeing the stars. This fog would vanish shortly after, reappearing every time the object made the same maneuver.

No strange odors were detected in the area (the cotton was treated with pesticides), or any heat or changes in temperatures.

The witnesses were greatly concerned and frightened. The object made a loud noise, comparable to that of a jet engine, although more muffled. Its light was tremendous, illuminating the entire field, and David told himself at a given moment: "We should take advantage of that light to change over the remaining sprinkler lines."
The UFO's final pass was shockingly low. So much so that one of the witnesses thought it would crush another worker who was farther away. The cotton's height was around 60 centimeters (23 inches) and the object brushed right over it.

When asked about its size, Mr. Fernández told us: "Its circumference was a big as a bullring. It was enormous. I can't tell you exactly how it was, but it was very large."
According to our own investigations, the UFO's diameter was some 35 meters (115 feet) – endless, when it's only inches from your head. The UFO stopped for a while over a nearby fence, where Antonio Palomo and another co-worker from Las Pajanosas did their chores. As it pulled away amid the glow, Mr. Fernández noticed that the object had a metallic aspect. It finally vanished without the witness having been able to specify the direction it took, as he was concealed amid the cotton and when he looked up, he didn't see the object again. Aside from the fright, the witnesses experienced no side-effects worthy of note.

They subsequently returned to the country home, waking everyone up to tell them what happened. They had to bathe with their clothes on in a water tank in order to get rid of all the mud covering their bodies and clothing. The 7-worker team, in another part of the farm, did not notice anything abnormal.

"I worked there some five or six years," remarked the witness, "and never again had a similar experience. If I saw something far away, it wouldn't scare me, but I never want to see it that close again."

Sometime later, when David Gonzalez returned home on his motorcycle after seeing his girlfriend, he had an experience with another large unidentified flying object that blocked the road, keeping him from proceeding his journey. He dropped the motorcycle on the side of the road and ran back to his girlfriend's house, and it seems that she was also able to see the object departing at a distance. This case was referred to us by Mr. Antonio Fernandez Gonzalez (although it was already known to us) since he found out what happened to his co-worker on the same night the event transpired.

Spain: UFO Chased By Two Jet Fighters (1977)

Spain: UFO Chased By Two Jet Fighters (1977)

The Witness

Name: Jose Chavez Jimenez
Age: 28
Marital Status: Single
Profession: Welder. Works at the Astilleros Españoles company in Seville
Address: Calle Comandante Castejón, 1- Gerena (Seville)

We had the impression that the witness was a very well-balanced person. He's a countryman, rough, tied to the soil, who told us what happened in short, simple phrases, entirely sure about what he was saying, or in other words, he told us exactly what he saw as if it hadn't the slightest bit of importance. He could've been telling us any commonplace event on the street. He felt no fear during his sighting of the phenomenon. He has no idea about what he saw, and [the same applies] to the UFO phenomenon.

There is another witness of this sighting, whom we have not interviewed, but according to Mr. Chavez, his companion "hadn't had a good look at that thing", and was therefore unable to recall the events in detail.

The Area

The time is late March 1977. The time is approximately 10:00 in the evening and the witness was hunting in the open field along with some friends. They were stalking "jabatos" (young wild boars) at a location some 3 kilometers distant from the Gerena-El Garrobo highway. There is a "cortijo" (country home) known as "La Mesa" two kilometers distant from where the hunters stood, owned by Mr. Lucas Acuña Tavares. The entire area is located approximately some 27 kilometers northeast of Seville. The hunters were somewhat stealthy and had spread out here and there, between the alders, holly oaks, mounds and weeds of this rough mountainous area. At one point, they were halfway down a mountain slope, facing a valley that extended beneath them.

It was a calm evening with entirely clear skies. The moon was waxing at an elevation of 45 degrees over the horizon, and behind our witness.

The Sighting

Mr. Chávez was stalking any young boar that might appear in the area that covered by his eyesight. Looking to the north, near the horizon, he saw a very bright, white star that didn't hold his attention. It was no more than a star.

Concentrating on his endeavor, and after a certain time had elapsed, he looked at the light once more, ascertaining that it was moving toward him, but very slowly.

Somewhat curious at this point, and ascertaining that it was a machine rather than a star, he looked more closely at the white light, mindful of his prey, and noticed that the light became increasingly larger.

Around 23:30 hours, the curious light was virtually over his head and at a certain height. He was then able to see in full detail that it was a circular object with an apparent diameter equal to three times that of the full moon, with a source of white light in its center, having a size similar to 1/4th of its total diameter. Around this core, near the object's edges, he was able to see a large number of small lights – red, green and other colors.

All of these lights were fixed, not intermittent, and cast no light whatsoever over the area occupied by our hunter. The brightness of the central light, of course, was greater than the surrounding lights, although these enabled Mr. Chávez to make out the object's edges and become aware of its roundness.

The only thing that astonished the witness was the absolute silence with which the object traveled. Despite having practically overhead, he could not hear the least noise. He only heard the incessant barking of the dogs guarding the "La Mesa de las Vacas" country home some 2 kilometers southeast of his position. These dogs would continue barking for a long time, until Mr. Chávez and his companions gave up on their hunt around 24:00 hours.

Suddenly, they heard the deafening roar of jet engines. The witness turned around and saw the unmistakable lights of two jet fighters, flying low and closing swiftly on the place where the unknown object hovered. Given their location of origin (southeast), Mr. Chávez surmised that they came from Seville to "hunt down" the UFO. "They were on its tail," as he would state during the interview.

Interested in knowing what the luminous object's reaction would be, he stared at it and realized it was changing position. When the fighters were in range, the object sped away "edgewise" at a terrific speed, heading toward Portugal (west). It completely vanished from sight in two or three seconds.

The fighters followed the same course as the object, and shortly after, the witness saw them return, vanishing toward Seville. "There's no doubt that they couldn't catch the object," Mr. Chávez thought.

We can attest to the fact that the witness of this unique sighting has not read anything at all about Unidentified Flying Object. "Those things don't scare me," he said. "If one ever comes close to me, I'm not planning to cut and run." We would state that he has no idea at all about UFOs or the UFO question.

It is precisely because of his lack of knowledge on the subject that we deem two details in Mr. Chávez's story to be important, along with the rest of his sighting: the barking of the dogs and the "edgewise" position of the UFO at the moment of extreme acceleration.

As any ufologist knows, animals have exhibited unusual behavior in the proximity of an unidentified flying object. We believe that there is no point in presenting any such case, as these are widely known to all.

With regard to the UFO's vertical (or edgewise) position at the moment it accelerated, we are aware of other sightings in which this detail occurred. Ufology even has a few visual records, such as the photograph taken by Erich Kaiser in the Austrian province of Styria on 3 August 1954, where three objects can be seen traveling "edgewise" and in a straight line (Stendek magazine, No. 27, March 1977, pg. 16 and 17).

Neither can we vouch for the photo's authenticity nor that of Mr. Chavez's story. We only want to highlight the surprising coincidences…and that our witness does not seem to be sufficiently well-versed in the subject to imagine such methods of displacement.

Ancient Footprints And UFO Engraving Discovered In Jharkahnd, India

Posted: 27 Aug 2013 09:17 AM PDT

Ancient footprints on a rock and a nearby engraving of a mysterious flying object are causing a stir in a small Indian village.

According to the Epoch Times, Geologist Nitish Priyadarshi is studying the large footprints in Piska Nagri village, on the outskirts of Ranchi City in Jharkahnd State.

The footprints, which are 30cm long and 12cm wide, look like they were worn by someone in wooden sandals.

Ancient Footprints UFO Engraving India

Local folklore claims the prints signify the presence of gods landing on site. God-kings of Indian mythology Lord Rama and Lord Lakshmana are believed to have spent time in the area in search of Rama's wife, Sita, says the Epoch Times report.

Mr Priyadarshi said the imprints appeared to have been carved on granite.

Ancient Footprints And UFO Engraving Site On Map
"It may have been made by the local people manually at that time in memory of the visitors," he said. "The footprints and the flying object are on the same piece of rock on each other's side. Maybe they were engraved to show that the two king gods arrived at the place on a flying object.

"Seeing the weathering stage of the foot prints it can be said that the age of the foot prints may be thousands year old."

"We live in a highly advanced, technical world, but there are nevertheless a great many mysteries all around us. Ancient places and mysterious beings, sunken worlds and cultures, landscapes imbued with symbolism, unexplained apparitions, and unbelievable finds from ancient times-all of these remain mysteries for humankind, despite intense investigations."
